I recently met with a friend and she asked me, "How much time does it take to plan a wedding?"
It's a good question without a single right answer. As I told my friend, "it all depends."
I have helped couples plan their wedding in all time frames. The longest being 18 months and the shortest being 3 months. It really depends on the couple. Below are a few tips to keep in mind when you start thinking about your wedding:
How long do you want to wait? This is the foundation for all of your wedding planning decisions. Some couples don't want to wait at all. They are ready to get married and they want it done as soon as possible. Other couples are not in a hurry and don't mind taking their time to the altar.
What kind of wedding do you want? Do you want a big elaborate wedding at a certain venue on a certain date? If you do, this can really effect how much time you have to plan your wedding. Many popular venues book up months in advance. And if you want a particular date that can really push back your wedding as well.
Are there certain guests that must be there? You can't imagine walking down the aisle and not having your parents, best friends, and grandparents there. Do they live near you? Will they have to save up and pay for a plane ticket? Do they need time to ask for vacation from work? If there are key people in your life that must be present at your wedding, it doesn't hurt to check their schedules to make sure they can make it.
How much money do you have to spend? Don't think that a small, last-minute wedding will be cheaper than a large, upscale wedding. Sometimes last-minute weddings can be almost as expensive because everything is on rush order (unless you're eloping). And with more time for planning, you have more time to find a deal or DIY certain parts of your wedding.
A lot of things when it comes to planning your wedding are negotiable. Your must have versus your have to's are conversations that's best to have with your fiance sooner rather than later.
